The Beauty of Traditional Chinese Zodiac: The Year of the Snake 蛇

The Origins of Snake in Twelve Zodiac

The snake is the sixth animal in the 12-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac. The snake is associated with the Earth Branch 巳. The snake's hour is 9–11 AM, when the sun warms up the Earth, and snakes are said to slither out of their holes. The snake's month is the fourth month of the Chinese lunar calendar, which is usually May or June.

Ancient Chinese Mythology

The human ancestors Fuxi and Nuwa are depicted as having human faces and serpent bodies, indicating that the snake was an early totem representing the power of fertility and reproduction in the Huaxia civilization. The snake is a primary form of the Chinese mythical creature, the dragon. The dragon is a divine being created by the ancestors of the Huaxia people and ultimately became the totem of the Huaxia nation.

In the original worship of the Huaxia people, the snake came before the dragon. Chinese people often refer to the snake as "little dragon." In ancient China, both the dragon and the snake symbolized power and frequently appeared on the ceremonial garments of emperors and officials. The image of the dragon was exclusive to the royal family, with emperors often wearing dragon robes, while the python became a beloved auspicious creature among ministers, with garments embroidered with pythons called "python robes."

The symbolization of Snake in Chinese Culture

In many cultures, snakes are often viewed as symbols of evil. However, in ancient Chinese traditions, they held a revered status and were among the earliest totems of Chinese civilization. The mother goddess Nüwa, said to have created humanity, is depicted as having a snake's body and a human head. Additionally, the Chinese dragon, a significant cultural symbol, also features a serpentine form.

In contemporary China, some still believe that finding a snake in one's courtyard can bring good fortune. Those born in the Year of the Snake are often regarded as possessing qualities such as wisdom, elegance, courage, and thoughtfulness.
