How to DIY Incense Sticks with Unscented Sticks (Easy Guide)

Want to make your own incense sticks at home? Creating your own incense sticks allows you to customize your favorite fragrances for a unique aromatic experience. It is fun and yet not difficult at all!

Materials Needed

  • Unscented incense sticks
  • Essential oils or fragrance oils
  • Carrier liquid: Dipropylene glycol (DPG)
  • Mixing container: Glass jar or similar
  • Aluminum foil
DPG and Fragrance oil

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare Your Mixture

Choose Your Scents: Select the essential or fragrance oils you’d like to use. Popular options include lavender, sandalwood, patchouli, and eucalyptus.

Mix the Oils: In your mixing container, combine the fragrance oils with DPG in a 1:1 ratio. For 50 sticks, you’ll need a total volume of 50 ml.

Step 2: Soak the Incense Sticks

Spread the Sticks: Lay the incense sticks on a sheet of aluminum foil.

Apply the Mixture: Evenly pour the oil mixture over the sticks. Gently rub them with your gloved hands to ensure they are well coated.

Wrap and Store: Wrap the sticks in the foil and store them in a dark, cool place for 24 hours.

Step 3: Dry the Incense Sticks

Remove and Dry: After soaking, take the sticks out and place them on paper towels or a drying rack.

Allow to Dry: Let them dry completely, which can take 24-48 hours.

Store Properly: Once fully dried, store the incense sticks in an airtight container to keep their fragrance fresh.

        Tips

Experiment with Scents: Feel free to mix different essential oils to create your own unique blends.

Safety First: Work in a well-ventilated area when handling fragrance and essential oils. Always wear gloves during the process.

Test Burn: Before making a large batch, do a test burn with a single stick to ensure you like the scent.
